Mentoring
Jeff Ang
And the things you have heard me say in the presence of many witnesses entrust to reliable people who will also be qualified to teach others. - Apostle Paul 2 Tim 2:2
Mentoring is a relational experience through which one person empowes another by sharing God-given resources.
“Mentoring is the empowering life-investment, in an accountable relationship through which knowledge, skills and attitudes are effetively modeled and imparted so that lives are transformed. - Rev Edmund Chan
Types of Mentoring
1. Assigned Mentoring. People assigned through a special task. People under your influence in office/ministry
2. Non In-Person mentoring. Through Books, videos, bible characters
3. Relational mentoring. 2 People with the same interest/passion. 2 People in a life on life relationship. It’s never about position.
KEY FOCUS
• Perspective : Focuses on developing People, not programs (being vs doing)
• Posture: Developing the right attitudes (faith, hope, love)
• Pragmatics : Living out biblical truths (anchored on God’s Word)
• Power : Empowered by the Holy Spirit (A Surrendered Life)
Why is Mentoring Important?
• It’s a biblical principle - 2 Tim 2:2
• A call to the great commission - Matt 28:18-20
• Modeled in the scriptures - e.g Elijah/Elisha, Paul and Timothy
• It builds depth in us; in our mission and mandate.
• It concretises the cause of the kingdom.
• It is a sustainable platform for growth and leadership development through raising and training of godly leaders.
Why Is It Neglected?
• It is time intensive, without conviction.
• It requires accountability and exposes weaknesses when applied.
• It lacks authentic models today.
• It needs patience, courage, effort, trust, confidentiality.
• It lacks know-how. Well intentioned but not effective.
• Lack of confidence.
How Do We Mentor?
• Keep : Keep solidly anchored in the word of God
• Facilitate: Facilitate mutual sharing
• Build: Build trust through transparency and authenticity
• Develop : Develop a kindred spirit
• Point : Point them back to God instead of focusing on the problem
“Mentoring is a brain to pick, a shoulder to cry on, and a kick in the seat of the pants” - John C Crosby
